Brex cards are the tools that you use to spend from your account, and can be issued to users of any role type except for bookkeepers. We offer two types of cards — physical cards and virtual cards — which you can issue following the respective section below.

Physical card

You can request a physical card from your Brex dashboard in three scenarios below.

Note: These instructions are for any user wanting to issue a physical card to themselves. If you’re an account or card admin trying to issue a card to another user, please read Can I request a physical card for another user?

Upon activating your account for the first time

Upon signing in to your Brex dashboard for the first time, you will have a virtual card automatically issued to your account which you can begin using right away. You should also be asked if you'd like to order a physical Brex Mastercard.

If your physical card has been terminated

If you don't have a physical card anymore because your previous one was terminated, you will see the option to issue yourself a new physical card.

If you don't already have a physical card

If you haven’t issued yourself a physical card before, you can do so at any time in your dashboard by going to Card > Manage cards > Get a new card. Choose the physical card option and enter your shipping address. You'll receive a confirmation that your card has been ordered.

Step 2: In the top-right corner, click Get a new card and select the virtual card option.

Step 3: Name your virtual card.

Brex cards are the tools that you use to spend from your account, and can be issued to users of any role type except for bookkeepers. We offer two types of cards — physical cards and virtual cards — which you can issue following the respective section below.

Physical card

You can request a physical card from your Brex dashboard in four scenarios below. When requesting a physical card, you’ll be asked to confirm your delivery address and you can expect to receive your card within 7-10 business days. If you need your card sooner than this, click I need my physical card sooner on the Processing your delivery page in your dashboard or the Confirm your order details screen in your app.

Note: These instructions are for any user wanting to issue a physical card to themselves. If you’re an account or card admin trying to issue a card to another user, please read Can I request a physical card for another user?

Upon activating your account for the first time

After signing in to your Brex dashboard for the first time, you’ll be asked if you'd like to order a physical Brex card. If you skip this step, you'll be issued a virtual card, instead, and can order a physical card later by replacing the virtual card. For security purposes, the replacement card will have a new card number. For steps on how to do this, read How can I replace my card?.

If your physical card has been terminated

If you don't have a physical card anymore because your previous one was terminated, you'll see the option to issue yourself a new physical card. If you have a virtual card that is not permanently tied to a budget or vendor, you can order a physical card by replacing the virtual one. For security purposes, the replacement card will have new card numbers. For steps on how to do this, read How can I replace my card?.

If you don't already have a physical card

If you skipped ordering a physical card when you set up your account, you’ll see a virtual card issued to you, instead. This virtual card won’t be permanently tied to a budget or vendor, and you can order a virtual card with a physical card. For steps on how to do this, read How can I replace my card?.

After switching from reimbursement-only to card access

If you started out with reimbursement-only access to your company’s Brex account, but have since been given card access, you’ll receive a prompt to order a card the next time you sign in to Brex. You can order both a physical card and a virtual card at this time.

Virtual card

You’ll automatically be issued a virtual card if you skip the option to create a physical card during your account activation.

You can issue yourself one new virtual card per budget assigned to you. To issue an additional virtual card for a new or existing budget, follow the steps below.

In your dashboard

Step 1: You can create a budget by referring to How do I create or request a budget?.

Step 2: Once a budget has been created, click Budgets on the left of your dashboard and select the budget you want the card tied to. You can also go to Wallet and click View all budgets and cards.

Step 3: Click New virtual card. A virtual card will be created instantly, and will be tied to this budget.

Once created, you can rename the card by clicking the three dots in the top right.

In your app

Step 1: After opening your app, tap New virtual card.

Step 2: Choose the budget you want to assign the card to and tap Next. Each budget can have up to one virtual card.

Step 3: You’ll now see your newly created card and its credentials. You can name the card by tapping the pencil icon beside Card name. Once you’re done, tap Finish.
